Love it, the detail is insane... how long did this take to paint?

This is one of my favorites. I'm a bit partial because I'm a fisherman but your color palette, depth, and textures are as pleasing as the subject. Where is this scene set? Do you paint from reference or memory, or do these come straight from your intuition?
Thanks for your question & kind comments, mnshortdraw. The city is an imagined landscape, inspired by Vancouver. The fishermen were based on a tourism advert from a 50's era copy of Time Magazine.
